geared turbofan engine option.
2% more efficient
CFM/GE Leap X engine.
PW 1100G-JM geared engine

Boeing could be considering geared turbofan option for 737 Max
Puget Sound Business Journal by Steve Wilhelm, Staff Writer
Date: Tuesday, April 3, 2012, 2:18pm PDT
Behind closed doors, Boeing may be considering adding a geared turbofan
engine option to the 737 Max as a way to gain an efficiency edge against the
better-selling Airbus A320neo.
Rumors were rampant about the possibility at the International Society of
Transport Aircraft Trading (ISTAT) conference in Arizona in March, and haven’
t let up. The possibility was the subject of a recent article by AirInsight,
an online aerospace publication.
“I think this is more than just speculation, based on everything I heard at
ISTAT and everything I’m hearing independently,” said Scott Hamilton,
president of Leeham Co. LLC in Issaquah and a well-known aerospace analyst,
who was at the show. “I don’t think this is just idle curiosity.”
Adding a Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan option would match the engine
options for the Airbus A320neo, which offers the CFM/GE Leap X engine as well
as the Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan.
Airbus and Boeing each claim its current re-engined narrow body aircraft is
more efficient than the other, but Lufthansa executives told Hamilton that
Boeing is only 2 percent ahead.
“If you accept the Lufthansa analysis, that Max is only 2 percent more
efficient than neo, if Boeing could get another 3 to 5 percent with GTF, that
would be a huge blow to Airbus and a huge advantage to 737,” Hamilton said.
Boeing spokeswoman Lauren Penning said that Boeing is focused on the Leap X
engine for the Max, and has no plans.
“There’s not a team on the Max considering otherwise,” she said.
But for Boeing, adding the Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan must be tempting,
because orders for Airbus’ re-engined A320neo remain far ahead of Boeing's,
with 1,400 orders versus Boeing’s 451.
While Boeing has said it has about 1,000 firm commitments to its re-engined
plane, so far, only 301 have been ordered this year.
“I expected to see a lot more of those commitments firmed up in the first
quarter, and that hasn’t happened,” Hamilton said.
The geared turbofan engine is unique in that it uses a gearing system to make
the fan revolve more slowly than the engine’s inner core, increasing the
efficiency of both.
While Boeing has contractual arrangements with CFM/GE, which makes the
current 737 engines, there may be contractual room to add a geared turbofan
option, according to conversations Hamilton had with Mike Bair, Boeing vice
president of Advanced 737 product development, last year.
Hamilton added that he expects some decision as early as midyear.
“If Boeing were to proceed with this — and at this point I have no way to
gauge — I think we’re months away,” he said. “It can’t be too much
longer, because they have a lot of airplanes to firm up commitments.”
