Cebu Pacific to operate single-class A330s with 400 seats
Cebu Pacific will operate Airbus A330-300s with 400 seats in a single-class
configuration on its planned long-haul low-cost services.
The Philippine short-haul low-cost carrier said on Tuesday it is planning to
start its long-haul services in the third quarter of 2013 with eight leased
A330s.
"The A330-300 will give us the lowest cost per seat, allowing us to drive
long-haul fares 35% lower than those currently offered by other airlines and
as much as 80% lower when we offer promo fares," said the carrier's president
and CEO, Lance Gokongwei.
"This aircraft type is very well-suited to the kind of networks we want to
build and the routes we want to launch," said Gokongwei.
Cebu Pacific expects to receive four of the aircraft by 2014 and all eight by
2016. Discussions with lessors are ongoing, but the aircraft will be put on
12-year dry leases, Gokongwei added.
Leasing these aircraft means the airline does not have to make a huge capital
investment to go long-haul and allows for the option of more efficient new
generation aircraft, such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787s when they become
more readily available in the market, said Gokongwei.
"There is a generation shift in aircraft and by early 2020s, we want to be in
a position to secure a seizable number of aircraft such as the A350 and
787s," he added.
Cebu Pacific is planning to serve destinations in Australia, Europe, the
Middle East and the USA, where many Filipinos work and live, he said.
The airline said 11 million Filipinos are currently working abroad and more
than half of those residing in Europe, Middle East, Oceania and the USA make
multiple stops and connecting flights home because no local carriers have
nonstop flights to these destinations.
"There is a significant market and they are underserved," said Gokongwei.
In addition, the airline will be setting up a "lean" separate management team
to focus on long-haul operations to avoid "taking its eyes off short-hau,l"
said Gokongwei.
Cebu Pacific will operate the long-haul services out of Manila's Ninoy Aquino
International Airport, where it has enough slots and traffic to meet the
demand, said Gokongwei.
The carrier could trade the existing slots for its ATR operations, which will
increase its capacity significantly.
