Finding Your Own Courage
Epidemics, layoffs, the AI revolution... Silicon Valley is always sunny, yet c
rises rise like waves, one after another. Have you, a foreigner living far fro
m home, ever felt like an unmoored boat, lost in the storms of your career and
life? We often think that a life in the U.S. will be smooth sailing, only to
find that circumstances are often out of our personal control.
For this event, " CafePhilo in the Bay Area" has invited licensed clinical psy
chologist Dr. Christine Chang to lead a discussion on how to focus on our inne
r strength when facing career setbacks and external uncertainties. We will exp
lore how to find our courage, re-examine our self-identity, and pursue our own
values, in order to discover the opportunities that crises can bring. Through
sharing and guided questions, we will discuss what truly hurts and what we fe
ar amidst various layers of uncertainty. We will also address questions like,
"If I don't define myself by my work, then who am I?" as we try to distinguish
between our overly intertwined self-worth and social value.
In addition, this lecture will include experiential activities to allow partic
ipants to explore the core of their self-identity from three perspectives: the
body, attachment relationships, and emotional experiences. Finally, the talk
will address the psychological stress and coping mechanisms related to immigra
tion and cultural trauma, as a way to better understand and change ourselves.
Just as the warmth of handwritten notes is precious in the age of AI, this unc
ertain era may also be an opportunity for us to re-examine how and why we “ a
re human."
