From FB Bart Kops hello friends, who can tell me or give me a good link about clonal tea, for me the matter is some obscure and hardly ever written about it. The same with the hybrid clonal s,whats the main use of it? Are there clonal s of Assamica and sinensis? The old tea areas have been planted out from seeds collected from the wild- some popular varieties are 'manipuri dangri' and 'betjan.' The 'vegetative propagation was done from individual plants which performed well after extensive trials were conducted on them by the Tea Research Association, Jorhat. Once approved cuttings were taken from this particular bush, multiplied, named and released to the industry. TRA has released 31 clones from Tocklai besides certifying many estate developed clones. Large leaf varieties are classified as assamica while the small leaf as China and the medium leaf as hybrid. (這邊有講到至少31個種和用葉子大小分類) Shiv Saria Similarly the selection process was carried out in Darjeeling where we have the small leaf varieties. The selections known as AV2, or T383 are known as clones and would have originated from a single (seed) bush which has been screened and selected by scientists from the TRA. Once selected and mass propogated, each bush is identical and will produce the same type of bush and leaf with the same quality. (Note: AB2 種的園子現在其實很多) Shiv Saria In our 2 Darjeeling estates, 57% of the tea areas are under clones, the largwst %age for any group in Darjeeling. (Shiv 是Rohini 和 Gopaldhara 領主) Shiv Saria Yes sir. Gopaldhara Tea Estate, Darjeeling is with the family since 1955 when my late father acquired it from Ben Kingsley. I was born near here in that year. Rohini is in the family since 2000 and the Saria family owns these properties besides Soongachi (1970) & New Glencoe (1987), the latter 2 are located in the plains of North Bengal and produce only CTC teas. Shiv Saria I have been actively involved in the management of all 4 properties since 1981 as Managing Director. I am actively involved in the Tea Research Association, Jorhat Assam and was Chairman of the Siliguri Tea Auction Committee. I have visited Taiwan in 2006 and have now been able to improve the quality of our production since then. Shiv Saria The tea was made from leaves plucked in February from section no 26 of Rohini. This section is well irrigated and was newly planted in 2005 to 2007 with both the Yabukita, and BB 157 clones. The BB 157 clone has a thickish green and rounder leaf, more suitable for oolong production. (想產烏龍) Shiv Saria This tea produced from this section is generally called "Jethi kupi." In the Manipuri( a state in the north east of India) language jethi kupi means iasmine flower. In the Nepali language( spoken in Darjeeling) "jethi" means 'the eldest daughter' and "kupi" means a ' funnel/cone.' Since Rohini produces the 1st invoice of tea in Darjeeling and as because the tea has a mild flowery flavour we have decided to call our earliest teas jethi kupi. Shiv Saria I visited Taiwan in August 2006 and was able to import a few containers of machinery from there. I am involved with research on manufacture and so I have been able to use my knowledge and make 'fusion' tea in Darjeeling extolling the virtues of both the regions which are well known for producing aroma filled teas. The tea has been hard withered, removing almost 84% of the moisture available in the leaf after plucking. It is kept cool than rolled in miniature half-moon rollers with minimal or no pressure.
