Wen Chan, a professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department
and director of the Center for Composite Materials, has passed away after a
brief battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held on Saturday,
October 21, at 10 a.m. at Moore Funeral Home, 1219 N. Davis Dr., in Arlington.

Wen Chan (詹文森 教授)
Chan joined UTA as an associate professor in 1988 and was promoted to full
professor in 1994. He was a Fellow of ASME and ASC and an Associate Fellow of
AIAA, and received the Excellence in Research Award from the College of
Engineering in 1999. He served as associate chair of MAE from 2002-03,
followed by a year as interim chair of the department.
Prior to UTA, Chan worked in industry for more than 10 years at Gates Learjet
Corporation and Bell Helicopter Textron. He developed several analytical
tools in support of Bell'’s research program for helicopter composite
airframe structures. His delamination resistance concept stands, among many
others, as a stellar feat of creativity and resourcefulness, and his research
led to more than 200 publications in the area of composite materials.
He earned his Ph.D. in aeronautics and astronautics from Purdue University,
his master of science degree in engineering sciences and mechanics from
Tennessee Tech, and his bachelor’s degree in engineering sciences from
National Cheng-Kung University.
He will be missed by all of us.
