Elimination of the GST/HST Visitor Rebate Program:
As of April 2007,
international visitors to Canada will no longer be eligible for a refund of
the Goods and Services Tax or Harmonized Sales Tax paid on accommodations and
goods purchased during their visit. Although many independent travellers do
not bother to apply for the rebate, nearly all tour operators and meeting
planners build the rebate into the overall cost of their products. For this
reason, the loss of this program could have a significant
impact on tour business, as well as Canada’s meetings and conventions market.
