Qantas to upgrade Airbus A330 software Steve Creedy From: The Australian August 05, 2011 12:00AM 2008:07:19 09:00:58 QANTAS says it will follow a European airworthiness directive to change software on its Airbus A330s once upgrades come through. European air safety regulators attempting to combat problems with airspeed sensor malfunctions on aircraft have proposed mandatory upgrades of flight control computers on about 1000 Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft. Carriers have 10 months to upgrade or modify the flight control computer software to comply with the new standards, which follow a previous airworthiness directive last year. That directive highlighted a flaw in the flight control system that would in some cases allow a pilot to re-engage the aircraft's autopilot after it had disconnected due to unreliable airspeed information. The European Aviation Safety Agency warned that in some instances a quickly re-engaged autopilot using the erroneous information could produce an abrupt "pitch up" command. The move comes after a series of airspeed measurement failures and unpredictable or dangerous autopilot commands on Airbus A330s in recent years. European regulators said the new software had been developed to "inhibit autopilot engagement under unreliable airspeed conditions". As part of a probe into a 2009 Air France crash, investigators identified at least 17 instances of temporary malfunctions of external speed sensors, called pitot tubes, on A330 and A340 aircraft between 2003 and 2008. In early 2009, EASA officials asked Airbus to "make an annual review of problems of this type". After the Air France accident, US and European regulators ordered that certain pitot tubes on A330 and A340 aircraft be replaced by more reliable models. The swap did not affect Qantas A330s.
