TTC strikes Just when TTC officials, workers and reporters thought they could catch a breath, something has gone horribly awry with the TTC's tentative contract settlement. Word leaked out about just before 9 p.m. tonight that the 9,000 transit workers had chucked the deal giving them a 3 per cent raise in each of the next three years. It's what many commuters and observers had feared when it became clear that the contract didn't have the support of seven of the union's 16 executives. Initially sources said a strike would be effective at 4 a.m. Saturday but now the union's made it official for midnight tonight. There's a little sunshine behind the clouds though.
