I live in Hyde Park, a historical neighborhood right next to UT's
west campus. Here's my rent:
Large 1-bedroom (570 sqft)
$525, including water, trash, gas
On 3 bus lines to school, 5-8 min by bus
By bike about 10-12 min
If I renew my lease next year, I'll get half-month rent free
Very safe to walk around late at night. I've walked around after midnight and
taken late-night buses.
Residents are UT graduate students and some undergraduate, small families
There are also several other bus lines (3, 338, etc.) to different places
Both Riverside and Far West are not close to school at all. You have to rely on
UT Shuttle, which is infrequent after dark, and almost none for weekends. If you
are going to pay that much rent, you should try to live close to campus.
Riverside has a very high crime rate. You should check Austin Police Report
before you move to an area. Far West is fine, but you have to worry about the
shuttle schedule and how you can go around in the weekends if you don't have
a car.
