Are you sure?
I think, if this rule does exist in common English,
Those dictionary editors should have already included this into those
dictionaries (and certainly given examples to demonstrate the difference).
Now, I found no clue for this rule in Oxford English Dictionary.
All of them just suggest it can be fish or fishes.
Copied from the Longman dictionary:
"Over 1,500 different species of fish inhabit the waters around the reef."
Is this saying a sort of fish as well?
Don't just believe a person... check more people.
I might be wrong as well.
However, does it really matter fish or fishes? What point?
At least, I don't think this is a very good point to judge a people's
native language ability. Else, there could be a very significant of Taiwanese
would be classified as bad Taiwanese speakers.
