This is possible and also can also be found in Taiwanese culture. For example, in Taiwan, a husband's wife has to call her brother-in-law 'uncle', while suppose to be called just by name in the Western world. Obviously, 'uncle' is a different rank although you might feel nothing. Also, at school, in Taiwan, whatever teachers are called by 'Teachers' whatever. This might be still true in the Western world (Sir or Madam), but is not usual in higher education or academic system. Obviously, 'Teachers' are different ranks, although you think you should call them the titles. This situation can only be worse in Japanese culture and the language. Japanese speak Japanese differently depending on their genders and social ranks. If you don't agree that or doubt that, you can just do a simple test. Next time when you see your teachers, call their name without any title in Chinese or Taiwanese, with a very polite attitude and manner. Then, see what you feel and what happens next.
